The Big Bang Theory has lost its mojo

I am a huge fan of the Big Bang Theory (“BBT”). I watch it on my local Fox and TBS channel when it’s on, almost every day. We recently re-watched Season 7, which I think is the best season of the entire series, and it made me realize that Season 11 is really not that funny.

Here are some thoughts as to why:

Penny and Leonard.  Penard is finally living on their own, in the big apartment and seem to be happily married. That’s great, except that’s all there is. They aren’t planning a future (like buying a house, or having a kid). They are like me and my husband (except we don’t eat take out as much as they do). They hang out. Nothing exciting about that.

Amy and Sheldon. Shamy are happily engaged and planning their wedding. A few of the episodes have focused on them planning (and testing their friends to see who would be the better maid of honor and best man). Plus, I think it’s weird they have lived in Penny’s apartment for as long as they have and haven’t changed out the furniture. Strange.

Howard and Bernadette. You may know that Melissa Rauch, who plays Bernadette, had a baby herself and is maternity leave. The timing of Bernie being on bed rest with their second baby is perfect, but it’s making for a very boring storyline for them. We see Bernie laying in bed talking to Raj or Sheldon and that’s it. Howard spends a lot of time out of the house without Halley, so you have to wonder who is taking care of her.

Raj. Raj is my least favorite character on the show, and it’s not the actors fault. The writers have made Raj so incredibly pathetic that it’s hard to pull for him. Last night’s episode was so bad and focused on Raj. The writers need to decide what to do with Raj and fast. Find him a potential wife or admit he’s gay.

Overall, the show is just boring and not that funny.  As much as I would hate to see this show end, maybe it has just run its course.

Just my thoughts. Do you agree?

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon)

The Marvelous Mrs. MaiselImage result
Starring: Rachel Brosnahan, Tony Shalhoub, Alex Bornstein
Airs on: Amazon
8 episodes, duration of approx. 45-60 minutes

Summary

It’s the late 1950s and Miriam “Midge” Maisel has everything she has ever wanted — the perfect husband, two kids and an elegant apartment on New York’s Upper West Side. Her seemingly idyllic life takes a surprising turn when she discovers a hidden talent she didn’t previously know she had — stand-up comedy. This revelation changes her life forever as she begins a journey that takes her from her comfortable life on the Upper West Side through the cafes and nightclubs of Greenwich Village as she makes her way through the city’s comedy industry on a path that could ultimately lead her to a spot on the “Tonight Show” couch.

Review

Have you watched this show yet? If not, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?

Midge Maisel is a wife and mother in late 1950’s New York. She comes from money and her husband comes from money. They live in luxury on the Upper West Side and dress to the nines.

Midge’s husband, Joel, has dreams of being the next Bob Hope. He goes to the Gaslight theater (in Soho I believe) to a club where you can showcase your act. Midge makes her famous brisket to help her husband get prime time slots. The only problem – Joel’s not really that funny.

After a big fight and a lot of alcohol, Midge herself ends up at the Gaslight on stage and starts her “act”. She’s really just venting about her life, but the audience loves her. She swears on stage (women apparently weren’t allowed to swear in the late 1950’s [thank god that law changed]) and Midge gets in trouble.

Midge catches the eye of Susie, the manager of the Gaslight (played brilliantly by Alex Bornstein). Susie is convinced Midge has a gift and wants to represent her. Susie works to get Midge gigs at both the Gaslight and other locations around the city.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel GIF

In addition to the stand-up comedy aspect, there is also a family dramedy included here as well. Midge’s parents are very strict Jewish parents, as are her in-laws. There are back stories with her parents, Joel and Susie.

What’s really brilliant about this show, however, is the writing. Rachel Brosnahan as Midge is amazing and she was very deserving of her Golden Globe. She’s so likable as this character and you pull for her from the beginning. She’s also incredibly funny.

This show is just incredibly amazing and I would recommend any watch it.

Top Ten Tuesday – Bookish/blogging goals

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme that originated on The Broke and The Bookish. As of January 2018, it moved to That Artsy Reader Girl.

This week’s theme is: Bookish Resolutions/Goals

This isn’t something I think about much, and I probably won’t have ten, but we will see where this goes….

  1. Read something other than romance. I’m not in a rut, because I love romance, but that’s ALL I read.  I need a good mystery in my life.
  2. Read more blog posts.  I tend to skim the blogs I follow. I need to take the time to actually read the posts.
  3. Read a classic. I’ve been wanting to do that for a long time, but haven’t gotten around to it.
  4. Get my Man Crush Monday posts back up and running. I miss writing about my #mcm’s.
  5. Read an autobiography/memoir. I read Cindy Garvey’s autobiography for god’s sake, you’d think I could read Amy Poehler’s or Tina Fey’s!
  6. Get better at reading/reviewing ARC’s. I’d like to get more into the ARC game, and reviewing is the way to do it.
  7. Review TV shows after watching. I tend to summarize shows in my monthly wrap up, but I need to do full-on reviews.

I have only seven goals, but that’s a good start! I hope everyone accomplishes their goals this year.

Why I’m Yours by S. Moose & C.A. Harms

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Where I got it: Kindle Unlimited
Other: Contains a rape scene

Goodreads Summary

A point in time, an unexpected event, changes everything.

Reagan’s life was about to begin. A recent college graduate with her career about to launch, she was living in Boston with her best friends. She had everything she worked hard for until one man took it all away, leaving her feeling empty and desolate.

After spending a few years alone, Reagan finally moves to Chicago with her best friend, Aimee, and vows to put her past behind her. When Reagan lands a job at Powers Financial, she never expects to find the one person that would give her back the girl she left behind years ago.

Drew Powers loves being the powerful CFO of a successful corporation and raising his son, Dawson. He’s known as “asshat” at the company and it doesn’t help calm his temper or patience. Drew’s main focus doesn’t include love or commitment. Those are the last things on his mind.

When the reserved and beautiful Reagan Halloway bumps into him and tests his patience, he ignores the lust he feels for her until she becomes all he can think about.

Fate is a powerful thing. A force that leads two people to one another and gives them both the one thing they didn’t know they were missing.

Review

I don’t feel it’s a spoiler to let you know this book has a rape scene.  I know it’s a trigger for some people, so I’m warning you up front. I don’t usually read books with them, but I decided to give this one a go.

Reagan is still recovering from a trauma and moves to Chicago to be near her best friend. She gets a job as the personal assistant to the CEO of Powers Industries, and on her first day, runs into a man who is very rude to her. Turns out that man is the CFO and her bosses son, Drew Powers.

Drew has gone through a bitter divorce and his main focus outside of work is raising his 6-year old son, Dawson. When Drew meets Reagan, she stands up to him and doesn’t cower to him, which he finds intriguing. He gets to know her, and finds that he genuinely likes her, and when she meets Dawson, they hit it off right away.

Something happened at the end of this book that was completely predictable and in my opinion, kind of unnecessary. I won’t spoil it, but I didn’t care for it.

My real complaint, however, is THERE WAS NO EPILOGUE. Romance books need epilogues so we have closure. We had none and I was pissed. There is another book coming out about Reagan’s BFF and Drew’s cousin, and I will read it because I like them. Maybe I’ll get my epilogue then.

If you can get past a rape scene, then this book is worth reading.

Three Blind Dates by Meghan Quinn

three blind dates

Title: Three Blind Dates
Author: Meghan Quinn
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Where I got it: Kindle Unlimited

Goodreads Summary

“Good Morning Malibu, it’s another beautiful day on the west coast! I’m Noely Clark, your host: and I’m in the market for love…”

When the publicity team of the new local restaurant, Going in Blind, began their search for a hot, local celebrity to promote the wildly popular eatery, they couldn’t have found a better person than me.

Outgoing? Check.
Single? Check.
Open to finding love? Check.

I signed up immediately.

A hopeless romantic with an exceedingly demanding schedule, I’ve found it impossible to find the man of my dreams—so Going in Blind seems too good to be true! That’s until they start setting me up on dates—three very different, very attractive, very distinct blind dates—and only one thing is for certain . . .

I’m in big trouble.

Good Morning Malibu,
I’m Noely Clark, and I have a choice to make.
The question is who will I choose; the suit, the rebel, or the jock.

Review

It’s January 11 and I’ve already read the best book of the year. It’s called Three Blind Dates and it’s by Meghan Quinn.

I cannot describe how much I loved this book. Noely Clark has had some bad luck with men. She hears about a new dating experience called Going in Blind and signs up – but she also uses her company equipment to film a promo, so her producer makes her talk about it on the air.

A little about Noely – she’s obsessed (seriously) with Tom Hanks, and her favorite movie is You’ve Got Mail.  She’s the host of a TV morning show in Malibu, California and her best friend is her co-host, Dylan (a woman). She’s also a major hockey fan (probably why I liked her so much). She’s close to her brother, sister-in-law and niece.

Here’s the concept. You’re set up on three blind dates – and all the first dates occur at Going in Blind.  Here are the candidates:

The Suit – aka Jack – Jack is Noely’s first date. Jack is gorgeous yet mysterious. She and Jack have an instant connection.

The Rebel – aka Beck. Beck is Noely’s second date. He’s very guarded about his past. He’s a muralist who rides a Harley.

The Jock – aka Hayden. Hayden is a professional hockey player who was recently traded to the LA hockey team.

I had a clear favorite that I was pulling for heavily. I won’t say who and I certainly won’t spoil who finally ends up winning Noely’s heart, but I was happy with who she ended up with.

This book was laugh out loud funny. Noely was hilarious. She was brutally honest and down-to-earth. She just wanted to meet her forever guy. I loved her family. Her brother and sister-in-law were absolutely hilarious and adorable.

I can’t recommend this book enough. Go out and get yourself a copy.
