Book Review – Fake Fiancee by Isla Madden-Mills

They say nothing compares to your first kiss,fake-fiancee
But our first kiss was orchestrated for an audience.
Our second kiss…that one was REAL.
He cradled my face like he was terrified he’d f*ck it up.
He stared into my eyes until the air buzzed.
Soft and slow, full of sighs and little laughs,
He inhaled me like I was the finest Belgian chocolate,
And he’d never get another piece.
A nip of his teeth, his hand at my waist…
And I was lost.
I forgot he was paying me to be his fake fiancée.
I forgot we weren’t REAL.
Our kiss was pure magic, and before you laugh and say those kinds of kisses don’t exist…
Then you’ve never touched lips with Max Kent, the hottest quarterback in college history.

4 out of 5 stars

As a rule, I tend to not read books set around college kids, especially romances.  Mainly because my son is almost in college and it’s weird for me.  Mainly, it’s just because I’m so far removed from that time in my life that I can’t relate.

This book, however, has been getting lots of good reviews, so I decided to give it a try.  First of all, the blurb above sucks.  It’s not really a glimpse of what this story is about.  Not even close.  Maybe if the blurb was a little more revealing, more people would be reading this book; and they should, because it’s really good.

Fake Fiancée is the story of Sunny and Max.  They meet under unusual circumstances, and come together again as seniors in college at Leland University in Atlanta.  Max is the star quarterback.  One part of this story I found super annoying was the drama surrounding the “backup quarterback” and Max’s ex-girlfriend.  None of it was believable, and in a way, it took away from the story.

What didn’t take away from the story were Max and Sunny.  Max was pretty damn mature for a 21 year old college student, and Sunny was wise beyond her years.  Both of them had lost their mothers, and had a hard time dealing after that loss.  Why Sunny becomes Max’s fake fiancée is a bit predictable, but it was a cute part of the story.

As for other characters, I freaking loved Sunny’s Mimi (her grandma).  She was a riot.  Sunny’s friend Isabella was great, and Max’s roommate Tate was cool too.  I wouldn’t mind a book about both of them…..

Overall, this was a solid read and I would recommend it.

Happy reading.
